Learning Languages the INTO SCHOOL Way!

The Power of Language in Early Childhood

Language shapes our world, our thoughts, and our connections with others. At INTO SCHOOL, we celebrate this power by offering a bilingual (Finnish-English) learning environment for children aged 1-6. But what does bilingual education actually look like in action? How do young children navigate multiple languages with such ease? And why is early exposure to multiple languages such an incredible gift?

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of language acquisition and explore how INTO SCHOOL creates a nurturing, language-rich environment for all children—whether they arrive speaking Finnish, English, another language, or none of the above!

Superheroes in Disguise: How Children Learn

Did you know that young children are language-learning superheroes? Their brains are uniquely designed to absorb new languages effortlessly, much like a sponge soaking up water. In fact, research suggests that the early years are a critical period for language learning, during which the brain is highly adaptable and efficient at acquiring new linguistic structures (Johnson & Newport, 1989).

But what makes children such extraordinary language learners? Children have a remarkable ability to acquire languages naturally and efficiently. Unlike adults, who often rely on translation and memorization, young learners absorb language effortlessly through interaction, context, and play. Neuroscientific research has shown that children's brains are more plastic than adults’, allowing them to store multiple languages in the same neural networks, making switching between languages seamless (Pliatsikas et al., 2017).

This natural aptitude for language learning also enhances cognitive skills. Bilingual children tend to develop stronger problem-solving abilities, greater mental flexibility, and improved multitasking skills, as their brains are constantly engaged in managing two linguistic systems (Bialystok, 2009). Moreover, bilingualism has been linked to better memory and academic performance, as well as enhanced social and emotional skills, since children become more adept at understanding different cultural perspectives.

Bilingual Learning at INTO SCHOOL

So, what does a day of bilingual learning actually look like at INTO SCHOOL? Here’s how we integrate Finnish and English naturally into everyday activities:

Two Educators, Two Languages

Each group has at least one educator speaking Finnish and another speaking English. This provides children with consistent and natural exposure to both languages.

Contextual, Play-Based Learning

Children learn best through play! That’s why our educators incorporate language into songs, storytelling, arts and crafts, and imaginative play.

Visual & Sensory Support

To reinforce new words and concepts, we use pictograms, gestures, and visual aids, helping children make connections across languages.

Theme-Based Language Immersion

One moment, children might be singing English songs about animals, while later in the day, they could be learning to express emotions in Finnish. By engaging with themes in both languages, they develop balanced bilingual skills.

Language Learning Everywhere!

Whether it’s during circle time, outdoor play, snack time, or art projects, language exposure happens all day long. This ensures that children absorb both Finnish and English naturally, just as they would in a bilingual household.

The Lifelong Benefits of Early Bilingualism

The advantages of bilingualism extend far beyond childhood. Studies show that bilingual individuals often perform better academically due to their enhanced memory and cognitive flexibility (Peal & Lambert, 1962). Furthermore, being fluent in multiple languages fosters stronger social skills, as it encourages empathy and cultural awareness. In the long term, bilingualism also provides a competitive edge in an increasingly globalized job market.

At INTO SCHOOL, we view language learning as an investment in a child’s future. By creating a supportive and engaging bilingual environment, we give children the foundation to succeed linguistically and beyond.

For families interested in experiencing our bilingual approach firsthand, we welcome visits to INTO SCHOOL. Come and see how language learning happens naturally in a setting where children thrive in both Finnish and English!
